Navigating entry into the field of planned giving can be hard for a young professional. With such a vast array of specialists entering this field at a higher rate it can seem overwhelming of where to start. The Philanthropic Planning Group of Greater New York (PPGGNY) does a marvelous job of working with young professionals to ensure they are equipped with the tools and resources needed to not only thrive in this field of fundraising, but to find a voice in sea of many.

As I started my Master’s program at Columbia University, I was very interested in breaking into planned giving after taking an introduction class on the topic. I found that that fundraising tactics and tools used by planned giving officers are interesting, dynamic, complicated and donor-centric. As I learned more about this field, one of my close colleagues introduced me to PPGGNY and within my first week I had two mentors, signed up to attend “Planned Giving Day” and so much more. PPGGNY introduced me to so many people who I would not have met otherwise and I am so grateful for that.

PPGGGNY is an institution that ensures everyone is given an opportunity to succeed. It doesn’t matter if you are an estate lawyer with 35 years’ experience or a young professional like myself, PPGGNY takes everyone in and works diligently to give you the toolbox you need to succeed as a planned giving professional in whatever organization you are a part of.

Four years ago as I contemplated moving from a law practice to the nonprofit world, I called the Philanthropic Planning Group of Greater New York (PPGGNY) to inquire about membership.  A PPGGNY member promptly returned my call and spoke at length about the fields of fundraising and planned giving.  The information the member provided was impressive and I immediately signed up.  I landed a Major Gift Officer position at Mercy College where my duties include planned giving.  I have continued my membership at PPGGNY due to the top-notch monthly presentations, which keep me abreast of changes in the law, as well as the opportunities to interact with professionals from renowned nonprofits in NYC.

When I first began my work in Planned Giving, I was very fortunate to have a mentor and friend introduce me to PPGGNY. After joining PPGGNY and volunteering for some time, I ultimately became a Board Member.

PPGGNY is so much more than a professional group and council. It will give you access to the finest people who are working in the field and a space to share challenges—and successes—as well as the best practices to achieve organizational and personal goals. As I advance in the field, I still seek out advice from fellow members and receive their help in various ways. The seminars, annual conference, and networking events will provide you with the perfect opportunity to make personal connections and expand your knowledge.

Whether you’re new to Planned Giving or seasoned professional—I highly recommend giving it a try. You have nothing to lose and so much more to gain.
