"Is Your Knowledge Growing As Quickly As Our Aging Population?"

Peter J. Strauss will discuss current issues faced by older Americans in maintaining independence and financing long term care, issues of particular interest to gift planners. Mr. Strauss’ presentation will also address issues faced by seniors and family members at the end of life, how to insure their control and independence as well as current developments about physician aid in dying.

About Our Speaker

Peter J. Strauss, J.D. 

Peter J. Strauss joined Drinker Biddle & Reath in 2014 as counsel to the Private Client Practice Group and is based in the firm’s New York office. He has practiced trusts and estate law since 1961 with a particular focus on the legal problems of seniors and persons with disabilities, topics on which he frequently lectures, and is considered to be one of the pioneers in elder law in the United States.

Peter has special interest in issues involving capacity for the execution of legal documents and health care decisions and the legal issues and rights of persons with respect to health care treatment at the end of life. He also handles guardianship matters and is known for his work in counseling individuals with disabilities and parents of children with special needs and designing special needs trusts.

Publications and Presentations. Peter is a prolific author and has written articles for various professional publications, including the New York Law Journal.  He is the coauthor of "Aging and the Law," a treatise for professionals published by Commerce Clearing House, Inc., and a consumer book, The Complete Retirement Survival Guide: Everything You Need to Know to Safeguard Your Money, Your Health and Your Independence (Facts-on-File, Inc.).

He has addressed the Practicing Law Institute, the New York State Bar Association (where he is a former officer and member of the Executive Committee of the Elder Law Section), the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Financial Services Association (formerly the International Association for Financial Planning), the American Bankers Association, the College for Financial Planning, the American Society of CLU and ChFC, the Heckerling Institute of the University of Miami School of Law, various Estate Planning Council chapters, the Alzheimer's Association, and the New York University School of Law Institute on Taxation.

In General.  Peter is Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Law at New York Law School, where he has taught Elder Law since 1990, and director of the Elder Law Clinic, which he founded in 2003 and the Wills Clinic he established in 2013. He is a founding member (1988) and a Fellow of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys.  He is a member of the Advisory Board of Caring Today, a magazine for caregivers. Peter was elected as a fellow of The American College of Trusts and Estates Council (ACTEC) in 2013.

He has been included in The Best Lawyers in America (2007 to 2015) and in New York Super Lawyers – Metro Edition (2007 to 2015). Best Lawyers named him "New York City Elder Law Lawyer of the Year" for 2012. In 2012, U.S. News & World Report named the personal planning group Peter founded at his prior law firm the best elder law firm in the United States.

Peter earned his J.D. from New York University School of Law and his bachelor’s degree, with honors, from Bowdoin College.  He is admitted to practice in New York.
