Powers of Deduction: Tax-Saving Strategies Under the Legislation Formerly Known as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act

Session by Thomas J. Pauloski, JD

Recent legislation made significant changes to the tax laws affecting investors. Which strategies are likely to work best in the current tax and investment environment? Thomas J. Pauloski, National Managing Director of Wealth Strategies at Bernstein, will discuss challenges that investors currently face, review income tax minimization opportunities, provide perspectives on the newly added “qualified business income” deduction, examine charitable contribution strategies that are likely to maximize economic benefits to both charity and donor, and compare simple gifts to “leveraged” wealth transfer strategies. Tom will use case studies and sophisticated wealth forecasting software to highlight key issues. This session qualifies for CPE, CLE, and CFRE credits.

Are you capitalizing on Program Related Investments, Community Capital, Pay for Success Bonds, Mission Aligned Investing, and Impact Investing? What are the negatives as donors become investors and compare you with for-profit solutions? What are you seeing out there? How are you winning in this new competitive landscape? This session qualifies for CPE and CFRE credits.

About Our Speakers

Pam Bennett, JD

Pamela Benett has served as Director of Gift Planning at the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee since 2011. Previously, Pamela was Director of Planned Giving at Memorial Sloan-Kettering for 19 years.

 

 

 

 

 

Lori B. Lasson, JD

Lori Lasson, JD is the National Director of Planned Giving & Estates at Hadassah.  Her team oversees approximately 500 estates and more than 2,000 charitable gift annuities and trusts valued at more than $60 million dollars. Lori has been working at Hadassah for more than twelve years. Previously, Lasson worked in private practice, first as a litigator and then as a trusts and estates attorney specializing in elder law planning. A native Philadelphian, she graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania and with honors from Temple University School of Law.  She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Philanthropic Planning Group of Greater New York (PPGGNY) and has been a speaker for various planned giving organizations including PPGGNY and the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

 

Thomas J. Pauloski, JD


THOMAS J. PAULOSKI is National Managing Director for Wealth Planning and Analysis, the research division of Bernstein Private Wealth Management’s Private Client Group.  He works with private clients and their advisors on wealth transfer strategies, focusing on tax-efficient wealth management and asset allocation decisions.  Previously, Tom was a partner at the Chicago law firm of Winston & Strawn LLP, where he concentrated his practice in estate, tax, and business planning.  Tom also has been a member of the Chicago law firm of Levin & Schreder, Ltd., a Vice President in the Private Client Group of Zurich Life in Long Grove, Illinois, and a partner at the Chicago law firm of Schiff Hardin & Waite.

Tom is a nationally known speaker on estate planning, tax, and insurance issues, and has written numerous articles and continuing legal education materials on estate planning topics.  He serves on the faculty of the American Bankers Association National Trust and National Graduate Trust Schools, and has served on the adjunct faculty of the Cannon Financial Institute Schools.  Tom has been an adjunct professor at Loyola University Chicago School of Law and has taught estate planning classes at Northwestern University Law School.  Tom also has served on the editorial board of Trusts & Estates magazine.  He retired from the United States Naval Reserve in 2003, after 21 years of service.

Tom received his bachelor of science degree in environmental engineering from Northwestern University, and his juris doctor, magna cum laude, from Loyola University Chicago School of Law, where he served as editor-in-chief of the Loyola Law Journal.

Tom and his wife of 34 years, Barb, reside in Highland Park, Illinois, with empty rooms for their children, Kathie (a recent graduate of at the University of 
California at Berkeley) and Mike (a sophomore at Indiana University).

 

Philip Cubeta, CLU, ChFC, AEP, CAP

As the Wallace Chair in Philanthropy at The American College, Phil Cubeta is responsible for the Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy® (CAP®) curriculum. Prior to that, Phil served as Chief of Staff for The Nautilus Group, a service of New York Life Insurance Company for its largest clients. Phil's original training was in English Literature, Philosophy and Psychology. He serves on the Planned Giving Advisory Board for The Jimmy and Rosalind Carter Center and on the Board of National Association of Estate Planners and Councils.

For the February 13, 2019 program, that means cancellations and requests for refunds must be received by 5 p.m. EST on Friday, February 8, 2019.
