“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to
get better. It’s not.”
From The Lorax by Dr. Seuss

Dear Friends,

It is hard to believe summer is over! PPGGNY is excited to kick off the
new season on Thursday, September 20th with three fabulous presentations: on gifts of cryptocurrency; estate planning basics, and, for our luncheon, to ask for a gift. We hope to see you there!

Please consider joining PPGGNY or renewing your membership to PPGGNY now so you can take advantage of all the benefits and discounts during the year. When I began my career in planned giving, PPGGNY was invaluable not only for the lessons learned during the monthly sessions, but also for the networking. Indeed, the connections have helped me and so many others in countless ways over the years, from providing advice to even finding jobs. We hope to include you in this fabulous group.

As part of our advocacy, I wanted to share an interesting update. PPGGNY is supporting efforts to resolve one of the biggest challenges charities face in planned giving: collecting an inherited IRA account. Many of you have experienced the frustration of trying to collect funds when a benefactor named your charity as a beneficiary of their IRA account. Financial institutions that serve as IRA custodians force charitable beneficiaries to open IRA accounts before they will distribute the funds to them. When the charities open accounts, the financial institutions wrongly compel the charities to provide all kinds of information, including personal information and social security numbers of their leaders, under the guise of the Patriot Act. The amount of staff time that is wasted on this issue is staggering.

Jonathan G. Tidd, Esq., is requesting a Private Letter Ruling (“PLR”) or two from the Internal Revenue Service to try to resolve this issue. PPGGNY joined a coalition of charities including The Smithsonian Institute, The Nature Conservancy, and American Committee for the Weizmann Institute, etc., to provide financial support to petition the IRS for guidance on this issue. Jon is generously donating his time and services, but the fee for one single PLR is $28,600. PPGGNY is proud to be a part of this coalition which we hope will ultimately save all of us time and money. We will keep you all updated as this progresses.

I want to thank the members of the board, as well as members of each committee for all their work during the summer and throughout the upcoming year. We encourage you to get involved and serve on a committee. Just let us know if you are interested. You’ll get more out of it than you put in!

Cheers!
Marilyn
