TITLE:  Senior Director, Planned Giving


DEPARTMENT:  Development

LOCATION:  NYC Headquarters (flexible)




The Senior Director of Planned Giving provides strategic leadership, direction and management for ADL’s planned giving program and related campaigns with a focus on growing the program for ADL’s future sustainability. ADL’s Planned Giving program includes gifts through bequests, charitable gift annuities, trusts, retirement plans, and similar complex giving vehicles that require specialized financial planning. The Senior Director leads a team of Planned Giving officers and support staff, and works closely with colleagues in major gifts, marketing and direct mail fundraising, as well as frontline fundraising staff in each of our 26 Regions across the U.S.




  • Develop and then implement a strategic plan for re-igniting ADL’s planned giving effort across the country in furtherance of ADL’s annual appeal and any special fundraising campaigns.
  • Provide dynamic and effective leadership and vision for the Planned Giving team’s efforts, developing annual and strategic operating plans that reflect short-term impact goals and long-term growth of program.
  •  Identify, qualify and cultivate a robust prospect pipeline, drawing from ADL’s existing donor base and expanding our reach through new leads.
  • Increase bequest commitments while diversifying and expanding revenue beyond bequests, including growth in Charitable Gift Annuities and other traditional and innovative planned giving vehicles. 
  • Personally manage a portfolio of top planned giving donors and prospects.
  • Solicit planned gifts through marketing efforts, prospect identification and collaborative integrated asks with major gift officers, senior executives and volunteer leadership.
  • Craft cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies to communicate with and inspire planned giving donors and prospects.
  • Liaise with the General Counsel and Finance and Administration team as necessary to ensure that estate documentation is reviewed, entered and processed in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Provide reporting to ADL Foundation Board as requested and support SVP, Growth and SVP, Finance and Administration in executing their responsibilities toward the ADL Foundation Board.
  • Work with development and marketing colleagues, program staff, and Regional offices to create compelling cases for philanthropic investment and accompanying marketing materials;
  • Provide stewardship for existing legacy and planned giving donors, collaborating with ADL’s Director of Philanthropic Engagement to ensure a holistic stewardship approach.
  • Be a subject expert on Planned Giving, keeping abreast of current estate, gift and income tax laws, statutes, and gift planning materials and vehicles. 
  • Support, educate, and coach Regional colleagues in their efforts to secure planned gifts and Serve as planned giving resource across the organization.



Direct supervision of planned giving officers and planned giving support staff. Some staff members work remotely.




1.      Skills

  • Extensive experience leading a team, providing strategic direction and driving results
  • Proven track record of success in working across departments to set strategy, execute plans, and achieve long term and annual goals
  • Strong working knowledge of estate, gift, and income tax law with the ability to clearly articulate to PG prospects, PG society members, and fundraising colleagues.
  • A passion for continuous learning, teaching and coaching.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills including writing, editing, research, and presentation.
  • Excellent attention to detail, strong project management skills and ability to manage and meet simultaneous deadlines.
  • Customer service orientation, interpersonal skills and a professional demeanor a must.
  • Technical competence required. Working familiarity and comfort in database systems, reporting, and analysis essential. Reasonable level of experience using Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and comfort learning new technology.
  • Strong interest in ADL’s mission


1.      Work Experience

  • Ten (10) years of experience in development or similar sales-related profession.
  • Five (5) years' experience in planned giving or closely related field such as estate planning or development/fundraising with strong emphasis on planned giving activities.


1.      Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree preferred.






Standard Hours

Full-Time (35 hrs/wk)
