Birch Family Services is a recognized leader in the non-profit industry as a provider of early childhood, education and long-term support services for children, adolescents and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities. The Birch team consists of almost 1,000 employees working together to help individuals reach their potential. Birch has been providing services since 1975. Today, we operate more than 30 programs in various locations throughout New York City, with an operating budget of $65M. Each day, our staff provides support to more than 1800 individuals and their families in early childhood centers, schools, and community-based programs.

 

The Director of Development is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all of Birch’s fundraising efforts including the major gifts program, annual fund, planned giving, special events and capital campaigns.  The Director works closely with the CEO and the Board of Directors in all development and fund raising endeavors.  

 

Additionally, the Director of Development is expected to foster a culture of philanthropy within the agency. This individual ensures that the agency’s corporate culture, systems and procedures support the fund development objectives of the agency. S/he leads staff and volunteers to institutionalize philanthropy and fund development within the agency.

 

The Director plans, coordinates and implements strategies to develop donor base and increase contributions to support the agency. S/he develops and maintains appropriate systems for fund development, including but not limited to, volunteer and donor management, research and cultivation, gift processing and recognition. S/he maintains accountability and compliance standards for donors and funding sources.

  • In partnership with the Chief Executive Officer, staff and governing body of the agency define the agency’s mission and direction. 
  • Public Relations & Communications
  •  Provides general oversight of all of the agency’s fund development activities, manages the day-to-day operations of the development function, and monitors adequacy of activities through coordination with staff, appropriate committees, and governing body.
  • Ensures attainment of the agency’s fund development activities through the selection, development, motivation and evaluation of human resources, both professional and volunteer.
  • Works with the Chief Executive Officer, development committee(s) chair(s) and chair of the governing board to ensure fulfillment of fund development roles and facilitate the optimum interaction between leadership and board.
  • Designs and ensures implementation of cost-effective fund development programs, employing economy while maintaining an acceptable level of quality and solid return on investment.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Comprehensive management skills and experience are required including but not limited to short and long-term planning, evaluation, directing and motivating staff, excellent oral and written communication skills, marketing and financial management, values clarification, and governance.
  • The position requires demonstrated experience in leading and implementing a comprehensive fund development program and producing charitable events, including annual gala and an annual corporate 5K event and grants writing
  •  Knowledge and experience in the following areas is required: the nature and dimensions of philanthropy, ethics, motivations for giving and volunteering, research and cultivation practices, standard fundraising techniques including face-to-face solicitation, proposal writing, special events, telephone solicitation, and direct mail, and, development office functions including gift processing, prospect and donor histories, and fundraising reporting.
  •  Experience and confidence in asking people to contribute time and money. Familiarity with computer systems, including Raiser’s Edge and other fundraising platforms is necessary.
  •  Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred. 
  • Minimum of 7 years fundraising experience in a professional position. Accreditation by the Association Professional CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Professional) is preferred.
