POSITION TITLE: Director of Gift Planning (“DGP”)
REPORTS TO: Director of Development
FLSA STATUS: EXEMPT – Administrative

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Director of Gift Planning (‘DGP”) reports to the Divisional Director of Development for the administration, coordination and development of all phases of the Gift Planning Program within the Division.   The DGP is responsible for cultivating, stewarding and soliciting donors and prospects encouraging and assisting them in making planned and complex outright gifts.  The DGP will use their specialized gift planning knowledge to evaluate and manage donor’s expectations, goals and financial situations in order to recommend optimal gifting options.  

1. Maintain personal responsibility for between 75 – 150 existing planned gift donors.
2. Maintain annual stewardship for all bequest donors within your area.
3. Maintain and build relationships with professionals such as, CPAs, CFPs, and Attorneys.
4. Make 10-15 strategic/substantive visits per month (donor, prospect or advisor visits).
5. Present 40-50 gift planning proposals per year.
6. Years 1-3: Identify or close twenty-four (24) plus gifts per year valued between $2.5M-$5M.
7. Years 3 +: Identify or close fifty (50) plus gifts per year valued between $5M-$10M
(Gifts and commitments include life income gifts, bequest intentions & outright gifts).
8. Promote, organize & participate in three (3) or more donor or advisor seminars per year.
9. Collaborate with Officers and development staff to provide donors with exceptional service. 
10. Develop and provide to management annual forecasts for production of gift activity.
11. Develop and provide to management a multichannel marketing plan for your area annually. 
12. Report activities and production on the approved Salvation Army Metrics Reports.
13. Submit Completed Gift Reports monthly to Territorial Headquarters.
14. Keep up-to-date on all appropriate tax laws relating to gift planning.
15. Be familiar with and remain current on various gift planning tools and agreements.
16. Promote, encourage and engage in joint DRD/DGP donor events.
17. Give full-time to Planned Giving.  Functions such as public relations, major gift development, foundations and corporation appeals, are the responsibility of other personnel.
18. Participate in training programs conducted by Territorial Gift Planning Department. 
19. When asked and approved by their divisional management, to serve on Territorial committees  Examples include but are not limited to:  Metrics Committee, ECGPI Committee, or other committees formed for the good of The Salvation Army planned giving program.
20. Work within the established framework and organization of the Division and Territory.  To accomplish this s/he will:

a. Conduct activities within the framework of the territorial gift acceptance policies
b. Work closely with the Territorial Planned Giving Director in the development and closing of complex gift planning arrangements
c. Refrain from signing on behalf of The Salvation Army any legal commitments
d. Refrain from any direct personal gain as a result of donor contacts.  Accept no gratuities or gifts and allow no bequest or remainder interest to be designated to the individual representing The Salvation Army

21.  Other duties as assigned.

1. A preference for candidates with an advanced degree or certification such as, Certified Financial Planner (“CFP”), MBA, JD, CPA or CSPG.
2. Minimum five (5) years of experience in charitable gift planning or in related areas of finance, trust management, sales or law.
3. Familiarity with gift illustration software programs such as Crescendo or PG Calc.
4. Ability to develop creative solutions and have entrepreneurial skills are a plus.

1. A Bachelor’s degree in marketing, sales, finance or other related field.
2. Demonstrated ability to close principal gift plans at the six and seven figure level.
3. Comfortability with technical conversations involving financial or legal concepts.
4. Ability to communicate effectively with staff and ability to delegate.
5. Strong analytical skills and attention to detail. 
6. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
7. Strong public speaking skills.
8. Ability to simplify complex issues and communicate these to a wide range of audiences.
9. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain poise under pressure.
10. Ability to work with persons of varied socio-economic backgrounds.
11. Ability to operate standard office equipment in an efficient and effective manner.
12. Ability to present oneself in a professional manner.
13. Ability to maintain confidentiality and sensitivity in relation to information and documentation.
14. Be a self-starter and goal oriented.
15. Ability to work independently.
16. Ability to maintain detailed and accurate records.

1. Advanced ability in MS Office including Excel, Word, Powerpoint and other Microsoft software.
2. Ability to use electronic media.
3. Advanced knowledge of integrated database applications.
