Session II: Luncheon Panel Discussion

Come listen to experts in the field discuss the intricacies of running, or starting, a successful Charitable Gift Annuity Programs. Panelists are Pamela Butler (Memorial Sloan Kettering), Pamela Bennett (Metropolitan Museum) and Michael Meehan (BNY Mellon Charitable Gift Services), with moderator Jonathan Gudema (Changing our World). Questions will cover administration, marketing, some finance, and even a few war stories will get mixed in as practical advice to fundraisers who are seeking to improve, or start, their charitable gift annuity program. Questions from the audience will be answered as time permits.

Moderator: Jonathan Gudema, Esq.

Jonathan began his career in planned giving and fundraising during his law school summers in 1992 and 1993 with the Metrowest Jewish Community Foundation. After practicing law for four years, Jonathan joined the planned giving staff at the Anti-Defamation League and later served as legal counsel to United Jewish Communities advising over 100 Jewish Federations in structuring gifts, managing planned giving programs and addressing legal difficulties in their organizations. Most recently, Jonathan has served as Director of Planned Giving for Continuum Health Partners, Inc., a five hospital system in New York City. Since joining Changing Our World in 2006, Jonathan has provided planned giving services to numerous clients from start-up planned giving programs and maintaining existing programs to advice on individual gift scenarios for fundraising and capital campaign clients.

Having worked in the development office for 18 years, Pamela has served as Director of Planned Giving since 1996. Her staff of 16 was responsible for over $50 million in planned giving income in 2009. The Planned Giving Group mails nearly 3 million marketing pieces, conducts over 600 personal cultivation and stewardship visits, and administers the receipt of some 600 bequests and trust gifts each year. Pamela has worked in the non-profit sector since 1987, prior to which she practiced law in New York City. Pamela has a J.D. from Vanderbilt University and an A.B. from Brown University. She is a member of the Charitable Asset Management Advisory Board for State Street Global Advisors.

A fine arts major and graduate of Connecticut College, Pamela began her career at the Metropolitan in 1988 and helped to shape the planned giving program from its inception. Pamela stayed at the Metropolitan Museum until 2000 when she left to accept the position of Director of Planned Giving for the Central Park Conservancy and launched a new planned giving program for that organization during its 20th anniversary year. In 2002, she returned to the Metropolitan Museum to assume her current position running the Planned Giving Program for the Museum, where she is responsible for overseeing every aspect of the Met’s program. Since the beginning of 2005 she has also overseen the gift processing and other aspects of administration of the Museum’s Development Office.

Michael’s role as Director of Investments, Investment Reporting and Compliance is to oversee the portfolio officers that are managing clients’ investment portfolios. He also serves as a portfolio manager, working directly with clients to address their investment management needs. Michael is the group’s liaison to the internal compliance group, ensuring that proper procedures are being adhered to throughout the Charitable Gift Services group. Prior to joining the firm in 2000, Michael worked at State Street Corporation for four years in corporate finance and global investor services. Michael also spent four years with the international accounting firm of Grant Thornton, LLP. Michael earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from Bentley College. He is a Certified Financial Planner® professional. He is currently a member of the Planned Giving Group of New England and the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning.
